Breaking: Two Newark Police Officers Shot, Prosecutor Says

Two Newark police officers were shot in the city on Friday evening, March 7, authorities said.

One of the officers was killed while the other was left critical, officials said.

A spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office only confirmed that two officers were shot just after 6:35 p.m. near Broadway and Carteret, and that one was critical — declining to provide details on the other's condition.

Both were rushed to University Hospital, where one remains in critical condition, officials said.

The NJ State PBA released the following statement:

"We here at the NJ State PBA are heartbroken to share that an officer from Newark PD has made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and another officer is currently fighting for their life in critical condition. Please keep their families, fellow Newark PD officers, and our entire New Jersey law enforcement community in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time."

"The members of the Port Authority PBA are sickened and saddened by the death of a Newark, New Jersey, police officer who was shot and killed in the line-of-duty Friday evening, March 7, 2025," the Port Authority PBA added. "We grieve with our Sisters and Brothers of the Newark Police Department and pray for the family of the fallen officer."
